How To Boost Your Energy With 6 Simple Tips From An Expert Medical Doctor.

Always feeling tired in winter? Here’s how to increase your energy levels, naturally.

During this time of the year we often find ourselves feeling in a bit of a slump. The shorter days, the gloomy weather, and the darker skies can make us feel groggy and fatigued. In our minds we may be motivated and determined to better ourselves, but the drop in our energy levels can prevent us from putting these changes into action.

If your energy levels tend to decrease in the winter, you are certainly not alone, and fortunately there are simple steps you can take to help.

Below you will find 6 simple ways to boost your energy, all provided by The Drip Stop’s founder and medical doctor, Alisha Damani.

1) Stay hydrated.

Dehydration can leave you feeling especially fatigued. (Darker urine is a sign you need to drink more water). Water is extremely essential for your overall health, in fact it makes up around 60% of your body! If you don't drink enough water, you can feel many physical effects such as lack of energy, irritability and headaches. Ensuring you are adequately hydrated will help you to feel more alert and will improve your concentration and mood. Water is also vital for a healthy digestive system and metabolism. It ensures the food you eat is digested properly, helping you to avoid constipation, which can also cause you to feel particularly sluggish.

2) Move your body.

Exercising boosts the circulation of oxygen inside your body, which allows your body to function better and to use its energy more efficiently. Exercise also gets your heart rate up and gets your blood flowing. It also gives your body a boost of endorphins which can make you feel more energetic. Winter doesn’t have to, and shouldn’t be an excuse to activate hibernation mode. Exercising is important throughout the year and there are many ways to keep moving in the colder months. Why not try a home workout, or some gentle yoga. Wrap up warm for a refreshing walk in nature, or for a real energy boost, try cold water swimming! In addition to helping your body create and use energy, regular exercise helps to promote better sleep, which leads onto the next point..

3) Get enough sleep.

Getting enough high quality sleep is crucial for your overall health and for feeling well rested and energetic each day. Sleep enables your body to renew and repair itself, due to the hormones that are released. Try to stick to a sleep schedule each night. Going to sleep and getting up at the same time every day helps to set your body’s internal clock which helps to improve the quality of your sleep. If you struggle with sleep, try meditating just before bed or listen to a relaxing sleep story to help your mind switch off.

4) Get as much daylight as possible.

Exposure to natural daylight will help you to improve your circadian rhythm and will also help you to sleep better. It also increases your levels of vitamin D which is essential for energy. Be sure to open your blinds in the morning to make the most of the sunlight, and get outside for a walk when you can. Our founder Dr Alisha Damani also absolutely swears by her daylight lamp which helps to wake her up in the morning and feel more focused and happy throughout the day.

5) Eat well.

Diet is another huge factor to consider for your energy levels. It is essential to feed your body with the nutrients it needs to function properly. There are a few specific nutrients that are particularly important for energy, such as vitamin D (found in egg yolks and plant milk), iron (found in lentils, red meat and dark green vegetables), vitamin B12 (found in dairy and meat), and omega 3 fats (found in oily fish, walnuts and chia seeds). Try to incorporate these foods into your daily diet and notice the difference in your energy levels.

6) Keep on top of your vitamin intake.

It is highly advised to regularly take supplements all year round in order to be wholly assured that you are intaking the required amount of the necessary nutrients, regardless of your diet.
